Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

How if we spend Zakat Mal to Build Mosque??

In the Al-Quran Al-Karim, the rules about who is entitled to receive zakat funds are mentioned below:

1. Indigent people
2. The poor
3. Board of Charity
4. The induced heart mu’allaf
5. Slaves,
6. People who owe
7. For the sake of Allah (Jihad)
8. They were on their traveling

The full verse thus:

Alms are only for the poor and the needy, and the officials (appointed) over them, and those whose hearts are made to incline (to truth) and the (ransoming of) captives and those in debts and in the way of Allah and the wayfarer; an ordinance from Allah; and Allah is knowing, Wise. (At-Taubah : 60)

If we look one by one, we did not find a mosque as mustahik zakat. Except when will be a Qiyas with group-7 to the interests of jihad fi sabilillah.

Based from that ijtihad, if the mosque had a distinctive role in the struggle to uphold Islam, then it could be classified as fi Sabilillah. Especially when it was built in the Muslim minority, or in the Muslim populated areas, indeed less to practice of Islam. So the existence of the mosque has become a struggle because of its high value mission to uphold Islam.

Meanwhile, when it was built just for the prestige or to show off the building, while after that the mosque was abandoned because no one prayer, or do not have a clear program of Islamization and certainly, the use of zakat becomes questionable. (Sarwat Ahmad, Lc/rumahfiqih.com).
